Cornelis van der Geest (1555-1638) was a wealthy spice merchant in Antwerp. He was also an important patron (commissioning Rubens\'s Raising of the Cross for St Walburga, Antwerp) and collector, and can be seen in a painting by Willem van Haecht (Antwerp, Rubenshuis) showing his famous collection to the Governors of the Netherlands, the Archduke Albert and the Archduchess Isabella. NG 52 was painted shortly before Van Dyck travelled to England for the first time in 1620. At a later date (before 1637) the portrait was enlarged; originally only the head and shoulders of van der Geest were visible, in a simulated, oval, porphyry surround.
This portrait is one of the most animated and effective portraits of Van Dyck\'s early years in Antwerp. Van Dyck\'s later drawing of van der Geest (Stockholm, Nationalmuseum) was made for the portrait print by Paulus Pontius in The Iconography.
