Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh (1612-42) in 1634. She is shown here in arcadian costume, either in the guise of a shepherdess, or as Flora, the Roman goddess of spring. Such pastoral themes can also be found in contemporary poems, plays and paintings. The identification of Saskia is based on a drawing that Rembrandt made at the time of their betrothal in 1633 (Saskia in a Straw Hat, Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett). X-radiographs reveal that Rembrandt began the painting with a different subject and composition, probably a Judith and Holofernes based on a design by Rubens.
The false signature and date may have been copied from a genuine inscription that has been removed, since 1635 is compatible with the style of the painting. At the end of 1635, Rombertus, the couple\'s first child, was born; Saskia was probably carrying him when she posed for this work. He died in February 1636.
The artist had painted another version of Saskia as Flora (St Petersburg, Hermitage) in 1634. Titian\'s Flora (Florence, Uffizi) which was in the collection of Alfonso Lopez in Amsterdam (see NG 672) may have influenced Rembrandt\'s pictures of this type.
Duc de Tallard sale, Paris, 1765; in the collection of the Duke of Montagu, London, by about 1780; his daughter married the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch; bought from the 8th Duke of Buccleuch with contributions from the NACF, 1938.
