The identification is confirmed by comparing the features of the donor with the engraved portrait of the Abbé Scaglia in The Iconography and with Van Dyck\'s full-length portrait of Scaglia (private collection). The features of the Virgin Mary may have been modelled on those of the Duchess of Savoy, Christina of France (1606-63).
NG 4889 was painted in Brussels in 1634 or 1635. The full-length portrait and a Lamentation (Antwerp, Museum voor Schone Kunsten) were painted for Scaglia at the same time. The Abbé was a diplomat in the service of the House of Savoy who had retired to Brussels. He was a discerning patron of the arts and a friend of Rubens.
Van Dyck\'s composition derives from a lost painting by Titian recorded in a pen drawing in Van Dyck\'s Italian Sketchbook (London, British Museum). There is a preparatory drawing in black chalk for the position of Scaglia\'s head which is also in the British Museum.
Bequeathed by Scaglia to the Princess of Phalsbourg; collection of Madame La Douairière Peytier de Merchten by 1791; collection of John Knight by 1819; Anthony de Rothschild collection, 1846; presented by Anthony de Rothschild in memory of Louisa, Lady de Rothschild, and Constance, Lady Battersea, 1937.
