Saint Paul holds a paper with an inscription from his Letter to the Romans (New Testament, Romans 5: 1). In the background Christ appears (as a gardener) to the Magdalen on the morning after the Resurrection, but tells her not to touch him (nnoli me tangere\') (New Testament, John 20: 14-18).
NG 700 was painted as an altarpiece for the chapel, dedicated to the Magdalen, in the church of S. Paolo in Vercelli. It was commissioned in 1540 by Francesco de Strata. The altarpiece originally had a predella depicting six events from the life and conversion of the Magdalen; this has not been traced.
A cartoon survives for the top half of the composition (Birmingham, Barber Institute) and a preparatory drawing in Turin (Biblioteca Reale) may also be related to this altarpiece.
Recorded in the church of S. Paolo in Vercelli, 1759; bought, 1863.
