His father displays his anger outside. This episode from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi (about 1181-1226, founder of the Franciscan Order) probably follows Saint Bonaventure\'s Legenda Maior.
NG 4757-63 come from the back of the double-sided high altarpiece of S. Francesco, Borgo Sansepolcro, showing eight scenes from the life of Saint Francis tiered in pairs on either side of Saint Francis in Glory (Settignano, Berenson Collection). NG 4758 was probably second from the left in the top tier of the reverse immediately adjacent to NG 4757; for further details on the altarpiece see under NG 4757.
The commission is unusually fully documented from the first contract to the delivery of the altarpiece in 1444, particularly the extent to which the friars controlled the subject matter, details of which were agreed with the painter in 1439.
Collection of Abate Angelucci, Arezzo, by 1819; bought with contributions from the NACF, Benjamin Guinness and Lord Bearsted, 1934.
