This episode from the Life of Saint Francis of Assisi (about 1181-1226, founder of the Franciscan Order) probably follows the account in Saint Bonaventure\'s life of Saint Francis called the Legenda Maior.
NG 4757-63 are parts of the high altarpiece of S. Francesco, Borgo Sansepolcro, commissioned from Sassetta in 1437 for 510 florins, painted in Siena, and delivered in 1444. The altarpiece was a double-sided polyptych. Other panels survive (principally Paris, Louvre; Settignano, Berenson Collection; Chantilly, Musée Condé) and tentative reconstructions have been advanced. The Virgin and Child with Saints was painted on the front, while eight panels with stories from the life of Saint Francis were arranged in two tiers on the reverse on either side of Saint Francis in Glory (facing the friars who sat in the choir). NG 4757 was on the reverse, probably in the top-left corner, with the narrative sequence continuing to the bottom right (NG 4763).
Collection of Abate Angelucci, Arezzo, by 1819; bought with contributions from the NACF, Benjamin Guinness and Lord Bearsted, 1934.
