The figure at the lower left has a crescent moon and star on his head-dress. In paintings of the Passion of the period the tormentors are often shown with yellow stars marking them as Jews. In addition the Islamic crescent may suggest that he is in every sense an infidel.
NG 4744 is probably one of the artist\'s earlier paintings. There are a number of pictures of this subject by Bosch and his followers in existence (e.g. El Escorial).
In many areas, the paint is thinly applied and the layers have become transparent, notably on Christ\'s garment, so revealing the drawing beneath. By contrast the crown of thorns and the oak sprig have been very meticulously defined.
