Christ\'s body, taken down from the cross, is laid across the Virgin\'s lap; the weeping Magdalen clasps his feet. The good thief (right) and the bad thief (left) are still on their crosses.
NG 43 is painted in grisaille. Rembrandt treated a number of biblical subjects in this manner in the 1630s (see NG 1400). They may have been intended to be used for a series of prints.
Initially the composition was painted in oil on paper, which was then mounted on a slightly larger piece of canvas over which the design was continued. It was then pasted to a larger panel, probably in the artist\'s studio. The composition was then extended at the top and bottom by painting up to the edge of the panel, probably by an artist working under Rembrandt\'s supervision. A drawing in which Rembrandt worked out the composition, making a number of changes, is in the British Museum, London. Another drawing by Ferdinand Bol (private collection) shows the composition before the final alterations. (See Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo NG 1333 and 5589.)
