In the background is the Annunciation to the Shepherds. The scenes are lit by supernatural light - from the angel and the Christ Child - and by natural light, from the shepherds\' fire and Joseph\'s candle (itself no longer visible). Such a depiction of natural and supernatural radiance may ultimately derive from the writings of the fourteenth-century mystic, Saint Bridget of Sweden, who had a vision of Christ\'s birth.
NG 4081 may be dated to about 1480-90. Nocturnal compositions of this type probably reflect that of a lost work by Hugo van der Goes (see the Nativity, NG 2159). The painting has been slightly cut down on all sides.
