The sitter wears a steel breastplate and backplate. He has been generally accepted as Fabritius, although no documented portrait of the artist is known. The same man appears in a bust portrait (Rotterdam, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen) which can be dated to about 1648-50. The directness of the gaze and the unconventionality of dress and pose in both works support their identification as self portraits. In NG 4042 use has been made of a self-portrait type familiar from the work of Rembrandt and his pupils. Rembrandt had painted a number of self portraits wearing a breastplate or gorget in the late 1620s and 1630s. Fabritius was clearly aware of these precedents, but chose a highly original background - he placed himself starkly against a cloudy sky.
An undescribed portrait of Fabritius was in the inventory of Catharina Scharkens, widow of Cornelis Smout, Amsterdam, 1654; NG 4042 was bought in Bruges by George Rimington, Penrith, about 1824; bought (Claude Phillips Fund) at the T. A. Brewerton sale, London, 12 December 1924 (lot 135).
