Saints John the Evangelist, Jerome and Mary Magdalene stand or kneel at the foot of the cross. Two angels catch Christ\'s blood in chalices, such as are used for the wine of the Mass.
This altarpiece was painted for an altar in the church of S. Domenico in Città di Castello. The altar was the donation of Domenico Gavari in 1503 and NG 3943 probably dates from about this time. Such a dating corresponds with Raphael\'s stylistic development and this picture has always been acknowledged as very close in style to Perugino. Two of the three predella panels survive (Raleigh, North Carolina Museum of Art; Lisbon, Gulbenkian Museum); they depict episodes from the life of Saint Jerome.
A drawing (Oxford, Ashmolean Museum) seems to have been a study for the figure of Mary Magdalene.
Described in the church of S. Domenico in Città di Castello by Giorgio Vasari (1550); collection of Cardinal Fesch, 1818; collection of Lord Ward (later Earl of Dudley), 1847; bought by Ludwig Mond at the Dudley sale in 1892; Mond Bequest, 1924.
