NG 3926 was painted on the same plank of wood as the Death of the Virgin (Chicago, Art Institute). It has been suggested that these two panels formed part of the predella for an altarpiece showing the Virgin and Child with Saints Margaret, Andrew, Peter and Mary Magdalene (Würzburg, Martin-von-Wagner Museum). A third panel showing The Last Communion of Mary Magdalene (present whereabouts unknown) may also have formed part of the predella.
