The Virgin is represented here as the Madonna of Humility, seated on the ground (see also Lippo di Dalmasio NG 752 and Dalmatian School NG 4250). She has a crescent moon at her feet, the remains of a roundel representing the sun on the neckline of her robe, and stars behind. These elements may be linked with the subject of the Immaculate Conception, a common theme in Venetian painting of this period. Saint Mark at the left is identified by the inscription, and at the right Saint John the Baptist, dressed in skins, points to the Christ Child. The cusped arches and twisted columns of the frame are typical of the Venetian Gothic.
NG 3897 is most probably an independent work intended for private devotion. It is placed in the artist\'s output between the two signed works mentioned in the biography (i.e. about 1359-66). The inclusion of Saint Mark may mean the panel was intended for the Venetian market.
A similar work, likewise attributed to Lorenzo Veneziano, also survives (The Hague, Dienst Verspreide Rijkscollecties).
