The exterior of the box is painted with illustrations of the three incentives of the painter mentioned by Seneca: Love of Art, Wealth and Fame. On one short side is an artist drawing the Muse Urania, with a cartellino inscribed: Amoris Causa (For the sake of Love). On one long side is a putto pouring bags of gold and silver coins from a cornucopia, and a painter before an easel, with a cartellino inscribed: Lucri Causa (For the sake of Wealth). On the opposite short side is a putto placing a gold chain around a painter\'s neck and crowning him with a laurel wreath, with a cartellino inscribed: Gloriae Causa (For the sake of Fame). On the top Venus and Cupid can be seen in bed, painted in an anamorphic projection. The interior is painted with two views of the interior of a house, intended to be viewed through the peepholes at each end of the box. Originally light would have entered the box from the sixth, open side.
Only six boxes of this type are known to survive. The interior of NG 3832 is similar in style to the Perspective View in a House of 1662 (Dyrham Park, near Bath).
Possibly in the [F. Halford] sale, London, 6 July 1861; presented by Sir Robert and Lady Witt (through the NACF), 1924.
