Recent technical examination suggests that NG 42 is contemporary with Poussin\'s Triumph of Pan (NG 6477). In spite of the questionable quality of NG 42 it may, therefore, be by Poussin or by some unrecorded assistant and part of the same scheme for the château of Cardinal Richelieu that Poussin executed in 1635-6.
The pose of the reclining figure is in part based upon that of the ancient Roman sculpture, the Barberini Faun.
