NG 3541 is a panel from an altarpiece, and was probably once part of the upper tier of a polyptych. Three other panels have been identified: Saint Peter (Washington, National Gallery of Art), Saint Paul (Oxford, Ashmolean Museum) and Saint Jerome (Baltimore, Walters Art Gallery). A polyptych that was signed by Zoppo and dated 1468 was described in the church of S. Giustina, Venice, in 1581. It has been suggested that these four panels once formed part of this altarpiece.
The church of S. Giustina had been an Augustinian church since 1448 which might support the identification of NG 3541 as Saint Augustine.
