NG 3318 was probably painted as a sketch in preparation for a larger composition of the same subject (Hartford, Wadsworth Atheneum). A date of about 1760 is generally suggested for NG 3318, but it could date from a slightly later period.
NG 3318 is one of a group of three sketches (including NG 3319, The Procession of the Trojan Horse into Troy, and a picture in a private collection in Paris, The Greeks descending from the Horse inside the Walls of Troy) which were probably made in preparation for a series of larger compositions depicting the Fall of Troy (of which only the picture at Hartford is known).
Probably in an English collection by 1833; bought, 1918.
