Renoir worked on this painting over a period of years in the 1880s. The two little girls and the woman at the right are painted in an earlier, softer style than the figures at the left and the umbrellas. Renoir probably reworked the picture after a trip to Italy in 1881-2, using harder contours and more severe colours.
Analysis of the differing fashions in this work confirms that the right-hand group dates from about 1880-1, while the woman with a band-box wears a dress fashionable in about 1885-6. It is not known why Renoir chose to rework only parts of the picture in a later style but this was his last large-scale picture of a contemporary urban subject.
