Christ\'s dead body is held by the Virgin. Mary Magdalene and one of the Holy Women (perhaps Mary the mother of James) are on the right. Saints John the Evangelist, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea are on the left. Three crosses are visible in the distance. New Testament (all Gospels, e.g. John 19: 38-42).
The inscription has been the subject of some discussion and the reading (especially of the second line) is not certain. NG 3084 is closely related to Cima\'s Lamentation of about 1512 (Moscow, Pushkin Museum), on which Busati may have collaborated with Cima.
The figure group in NG 3084 depends on Cima\'s Lamentation, and the bridge, buildings and distant hill are derived from a Resurrection by Giovanni Bellini (Berlin, Staatliche Museen) - perhaps by means of a Bellini workshop drawing (Milan, Ambrosiana). Busati used this landscape motif on other occasions (e.g. his Saint Mark Enthroned, Venice, Accademia). Cleaning has revealed two putti on the parapet. Nicodemus - who looks out at the viewer - is perhaps a self portrait of Busati.
