This fragment was part of a decorative border surrounding a large fresco. Together with NG 3071 it probably comes from the Chapter House of the church of S. Francesco, Siena. Two other frescoes by Pietro Lorenzetti from the Chapter House survive (the Crucifixion and the Resurrection; now in the church of S. Francesco, Siena, and probably painted around 1336). Such subordinate elements were frequently painted by assistants, and these two fragments have been attributed to the workshop of Pietro Lorenzetti.
Ambrogio Lorenzetti was also involved in this fresco cycle for the Chapter House of the church of S. Francesco, Siena: a fragment from his frescoes is in the Collection (see NG 1147).
