Other Muses from the same series are in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Ferrara; the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest (signed by Michele Pannonio); the Poldi Pezzoli, Milan; and the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. They were painted for a room in the Este villa of Belfiore (near Ferrara; destroyed in 1483). It was probably painted in the late 1450s, when Tura was employed at Belfiore by Borso d\'Este as \'painter of the studiolo\' (1458-63). The series would have hung high on the wall of a studiolo - hence the low vanishing-point.
Technical examination of NG 3070 (in 1987) has demonstrated radical changes to an earlier picture possibly by the Sienese painter Angelo del Maccagnino which differed in medium and composition and had perhaps been left unfinished on his death (probably about 1456-8). The panel has been cut on all four sides.
S. Domenico, Ferrara, by about 1706; Costabili collection, Ferrara, by 1836; acquired by Sir A.H. Layard, probably in 1866; Layard Bequest, 1916.
