Saint Catherine of Siena (1347?-1380; canonised in 1461) is depicted as a Dominican tertiary holding a lily, a symbol of purity (and also a symbol of the Virgin and Saint Dominic); Saint Catherine of Alexandria is shown with her attribute of a wheel at her feet and with a martyr\'s palm. The Christ Child places a ring on her finger, a reference to her vision in which she received this token of his love - the so-called \'mystic marriage of Saint Catherine\'. He also holds a ring for the other Catherine, whose hand the Virgin holds in preparation.
NG 298 was painted as an altarpiece for the altar in the Certosa (Charterhouse) of Pavia that was dedicated to the two Saints Catherine. It was probably painted in about 1490 during Bergognone\'s first and chief period of activity in the Certosa, for which he painted ten altarpieces. NG 298 originally had a lunette of the Pietà with Saint John and Mary Magdalene; this was bought by the National Gallery at the same time as NG 298, but was lost at sea.
Perugino painted an altarpiece for the Certosa, NG 288 in the Collection.
Recorded in the Certosa, Pavia, 1645; bought, 1857.
