The Virgin and Child are seated in front of a cloth of honour.
The composition is derived from an altarpiece - in which the Virgin was depicted full-length on a throne - by Giovanni Bellini. This altarpiece is now known only through replicas and copies, including NG 286. A variant by Bellini, truncated in format but probably of the original figure size, is also in the Collection (NG 280).
