The painting is closely related to a self-portrait etching made by Rembrandt in the previous year, 1639. In both the print and the painting the composition is influenced by Raphael\'s Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione (Paris, Louvre) and Titian\'s Portrait of a Man (NG 1944), which in the seventeenth century was thought to show the Italian poet Ariosto. Rembrandt certainly knew the Castiglione, of which he made a rough sketch at or after the sale of Lucas van Uffelen\'s pictures in Amsterdam in April 1639, when it was bought by Alfonso Lopez. He could also have seen the Titian \'Ariosto\' in Amsterdam since it (or a copy) was in Lopez\'s collection at some time between 1637 and 1641.
The support of NG 672 may originally have been rectangular and the top corners subsequently removed to give an arched shape. X-radiographs reveal two significant pentimenti: the artist\'s left hand was shown with his fingers resting on the parapet, and initially his collar was more rounded and extended towards the right.
General Dupont collection, Paris; bought, 1861.
