The saints are, from left to right, John the Evangelist, Scholastica (who is dressed as a Benedictine abbess) and her brother Benedict, the founder of the Benedictine Order, who is dressed as an abbot. This fragment originally formed part of a Crucifixion scene (part of Christ\'s loin cloth can be seen at the upper left), the central panel of the altarpiece from the Benedictine Abbey of Liesborn. On the crook of Scholastica\'s crozier is a depiction of the Sacrifice of Isaac, perceived as a prefiguration of the Crucifixion.
