NG 667 may have been commissioned by Piero de\'Medici (1414-69) or by Pierfrancesco di Lorenzo di Giovanni di Bicci de\' Medici (1430-77), whose name saints, Peter Martyr and Francis, are on the far right and left respectively. Another name saint, John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, is in the centre. He is flanked by Saints Damian and Cosmas, the two patron saints of the Medici because they were physicians (medici in Italian). Saints Lawrence and Anthony Abbot are beside Cosmas and Damian.
NG 666 and 667 are companion pieces and were probably set into the furniture of the Palazzo Medici in the Via Larga in Florence (perhaps as overdoors or bedheads; a painted bedhead can be seen in Giovanni di Paolo NG 5453). A date after 1456 has been proposed for these two pictures.
Uccello NG 583 was also painted for the Medici family at about this time.
Acquired from the Palazzo Riccardi (formerly Palazzo Medici) by the Metzger brothers shortly before 1848; bought by Alexander Barker before 1855; bought, 1861.
