The Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin that she will bear the Son of God. New Testament (Luke 1: 26-38). The scene is framed by fictive columns surmounted by sculptures of Old Testament prophets who foretold the birth of Christ. Within the room there is a statue of God the Father between the windows. On the panes and the cushions are coats of arms and heraldic devices which may indicate the identity of the patrons. A framed prayer is hung on the wall above the bench.
NG 256 is one of several surviving fragments of the high altarpiece in the Benedictine Abbey of Liesborn. The subject of the central panel was the Crucifixion (see NG 259-261). Apart from NG 256, 257 and 258, fragments of a Nativity with Angels (Münster, Westfälisches Landesmuseum) also survive. Older reconstructions of the altarpiece have suggested that these four panels made up a fixed left-hand shutter, but recently it has plausibly been suggested that the four panels flanked the Crucifixion in two pairs, a common Westphalian arrangement.
The high altar was dedicated in 1465 by Abbot Heinrich von Cleve (died 1490), and the altarpiece has been dated to the mid-1470s.
Still in situ, 1803; dismembered and dispersed, apparently 1807; bought from the Krüger collection, 1854.
