The Gospels describe the event as taking place by the river Jordan, but this landscape recalls the scenery around Borgo Sansepolcro, which may be the town to the left. Three angels attend with robes to cover Christ. In the right middle distance are four men wearing priestly robes; one seems to point to the source of divine light above. Its descent and the haloes of the principal figures are finely defined in gold.
NG 665 was either an altarpiece in its own right, or planned as the central part of a larger ensemble; it was probably painted for a chapel dedicated to the Baptist in the Camaldolese Abbey (Badia) of Borgo Sansepolcro in the 1450s. In about 1465 panels by Matteo di Giovanni bearing the Graziani family arms were added, converting it to a triptych with predella - it is possible that such a scheme had always been projected.
