Ribera painted several Lamentations and Depositions (e.g. Naples, S. Martino, and Paris, Louvre) although this appears to be his earliest surviving picture of the subject. It has been suggested that NG 235 is the picture painted in 1623 for the Genoese nobleman Marcantonio Doria.
Said to have been in the Royal Gallery, Naples, and removed by Eugène de Beauharnais (died 1824); probably bought from Hogarth by David Barclay, by whom presented, 1853.
