The sitter is depicted against a dark blue background; he wears a fur-trimmed dark coat, a white undergarment and a red head-dress. The inscription at the top may be intended as a pun on the artist\'s name, related to a Flemish saying: \'As I [Eyck] can but not as I [Eyck] would.\' The work was described in about 1655 as a self portrait; the direct eye-contact with the viewer and inscription provide some support for such a view, but no certain portrait of the artist survives.
The \'Als ich can\' inscription appears on several other paintings by van Eyck, including his portrait of his wife, Margaret, of 1439 (Bruges, Groeningemuseum).
Collection of Lord and Lady Arundel before 1655; bought, 1851.
