The traditional title of the painting \'Dr Peral\' derives from a label on the reverse which refers to Juan del Peral who died in Paris in 1888 and was the son of Andrés.
NG 1951 is almost certainly identical with the portrait of Don Andrés del Peral which Goya exhibited at the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid in the summer of 1798. It was highly praised by contemporaries.
Bought from the granddaughter of \'Dr Peral\' in Seville by the Marqués de la Vega-Inclán in the late nineteenth century; presented by Sir George Donaldson, 1904.
