The sitter in this portrait is identified as Doge Loredan by comparison with portrait medals. The doge was the elected head of the oligarchic Republic of Venice. Loredan wears the ceremonial robes and hat of his office.
Leonardo Loredan (1436-1521) was elected doge in 1501 and the painting may have been commissioned to commemorate his appointment. Giovanni Bellini is known to have worked for Loredan in 1504, and NG 189 has also been dated to that year.
The painting is exceptionally well-preserved.
