Mythological pictures by Palma are rare. Ridolfi mentioned in his catalogue of the artist\'s works a Mars and Venus painted for the poet Cavaliere Marino. But Venus\' hairstyle suggests the late 1580s, which is somewhat early if the picture was painted for Marino (born 1569).
When NG 1866 was presented to the Gallery the donor stated that it was not suitable for public exhibition, and so it hung for many years in the Director\'s Office; it was first catalogued in 1929.
Almost certainly the picture seen by Richard Symonds in the possession of the Earl of Northumberland, 1652; presented by the Duke of Northumberland, 1838.
