New Testament (Mark 14: 32-43). The panel is painted with a decorative framing border which includes the nails, the crown of thorns and two Scourges, all instruments of the Passion.
The figure of Christ is closely related to that in NG 1032. The attribution of NG 1812 to Lo Spagna has not been unanimously accepted, but if it is correct this small panel can probably be dated to the beginning of the sixteenth century, perhaps about 1500-5.
There is a companion panel in the collection of the Duke of Sutherland. This is Christ carrying the Cross and has a similar painted border. It is said to have come from the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Florence, which would, if proven, add to our knowledge of the provenance of NG 1812.
Probably in the Niccolini collection, Rome, about 1575-1600; collection of Henry Farrer by 1850; bequeathed by Henry Vaughan, 1900.
