Centre: the Crucifixion. On Christ\'s right is the good thief with a polygonal halo; angels carry his soul to heaven. On his left is the bad thief whose pink flesh colour shows he is still alive; his legs are being broken and devils hold a brazier with burning coals over his head. In the frame, on the left of the Crucifixion: Saints John the Baptist and Paul; on the right, Saints James the Greater and Bartholomew. The predella depicts (left to right) a female saint, Saint Bernard with a book inscribed from his Liber de Passione Christi et doloribus et planctibus matris ejus (Book of the Passion of Christ and the Sorrows and Lamentations of his Mother), the Virgin and Child, a monk saint, probably Anthony Abbot, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
NG 1468 was possibly painted for a sacristy or private oratory and perhaps for a Cistercian foundation - as suggested by the inclusion of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. It appears to be the work of at least two artists, principally Jacopo di Cione. The frame with its starred canopy and the pilasters with decorative pastiglia and painted shields are original.
