The Virgin, crowned as the Queen of Heaven, holds the Christ Child who blesses. They are surrounded by six angels wearing contemporary Florentine costume. They all stand on a semi-circular marbled platform. The predella is ornamented with pastiglia and includes three painted quatrefoils showing the Virgin, the Dead Christ and Saint John.
NG 1456 has been attributed to various Florentine and Sienese artists, including School of Sassetta, Primo della Quercia (active about 1438-1467), the brother of the sculptor Jacopo della Quercia, and Andrea di Giusto. It is now linked on grounds of style with the work of Francesco di Antonio, but differs from his triptych of 1415 at Cambridge (see biography).
