The building has not been identified. A christening party enters from the right, while behind them a priest celebrates Mass in a side chapel. In the main aisle mourners sit around a catafalque in front of the screen. The paintings hanging in the church show the Adoration of the Magi and the Raising of Lazarus.
The architecture of NG 1443 was painted by Steenwyck, but the figures appear to be by another artist, probably Jan Brueghel the Elder (see NG Steenwyck 2204, where comparable figures are depicted). The name Hans Goyvaerts, which is on the back of the copper support, may have been that of the Antwerp art dealer from whom Brueghel bought the picture before adding the figures.
