The shape and size of the painting indicate that it was painted as part of a piece of furniture or for the panelling of a room. Its style suggests that it was painted in the 1540s.
Possibly in the Medici collection, Rome, by 1670; probably in the collection of Lord Northwick by 1859; presented by George Salting, 1894.
