The inscription on the book comprises Psalm 51: 15, Psalm 70: 1 and a prayer. This combination is said at matins, according to the Roman Catholic Breviary, and in the Anglican morning service. The Christ Child holds a rosary.
In the right background the unfinished façade, and beyond that the transept, of the Certosa (Charterhouse) at Pavia can be seen. This probably indicates a date of about 1488-90. Bergognone was then busy painting for the Certosa (see NG 298). NG 1410, which shows a number of Carthusians prominently in the background, may have been commissioned by a member of the order for his private devotions.
Collection of Contessa Elisabetta Ottolini Visconti, Milan, by 1865 (said to be a gift from one of Napoleon\'s generals or from Napoleon himself); acquired by Lady Eastlake, 1867; bought, 1894.
