\'Ecce Homo\' (Behold the Man) were Pilate\'s words to the people when he presented Christ to them before the Crucifixion. Jesus stands with his hands bound, crowned with thorns. Pilate rises from his seat, rejecting the rod of justice the Jewish elders offer him. The hand of the clock points to six in accordance with the Gospel (John 19: 4-5, 13-16): \'[at] about the sixth hour n he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!\' The priests declared, \'We have no King but Caesar\', which is referred to by the bust at the right, a symbol of temporal Roman power.
NG 1400 is painted in grisaille and was used as a preparatory study for an etching by Rembrandt known in two states (1635, unfinished, and 1636). It was laid onto the etching plate and the outlines of the design transferred onto the plate with a stylus: the indentations of this transfer can be clearly seen.
