The smaller painting on the wall is in the manner of Jan Wijnants (see NG 884). The larger work, which appears in two other paintings by Vermeer (New York, Frick Collection; Metropolitan Museum of Art), is apparently in the style of Cesar van Everdingen, and may be a painting recorded in the possession of the painter\'s widow in 1676. Its subject may refer to the theme of fidelity. The inside of the virginal is painted with a landscape and there is a skirting of blue and white Delft tiles.
NG 1383 is dated on grounds of style to about 1670.
It has been suggested that NG 1383 is a pair to the National Gallery\'s other Vermeer, NG 2568. The works are the same size, similarly dated, and thematically can be contrasted because of the subjects of the paintings within them. But they have different provenances before the nineteenth century, and the artist is known to have on other occasions explored variations on a theme, rather than consciously creating pendants. This painting - and NG 2568 - were in the collection of the French art critic Théophile Thoré who wrote two articles in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1866 which heralded the \'rediscovery\' of Vermeer.
Possibly collection of Diego Duarte, Antwerp, 1682; collection of Etienne-Joseph-Théophile Thoré (Thoré-Bürger), Paris, by 1866; bought, 1892.
