The artist painted a number of capricci of this sort in which a known monument is set within a fanciful arrangement of ruins. The pyramid is based upon that of Caius Cestius in Rome, while all of the other elements are invented.
It has been suggested that NG 138 is one of the artist\'s earlier works and can be dated to about 1730. It may include some intervention by a member of his studio.
