Saint Bertin\'s soul is shown in NG 1302. The reverse, which is painted in grisaille, depicts a Gothic canopy and spire. This originally appeared above an image of the Virgin Annunciate.
NG 1302 and 1303 are fragments from the tops of the shutters of the precious metalwork altarpiece placed on the high altar of the abbey church of St Bertin in St-Omer, northern France. The altarpiece itself, which is now lost, was made between 1455 and 1459 when it was dedicated by its patron, Guillaume Fillastre (appointed abbot, 1442; buried in St Bertin, 1473). The shutters (Berlin, Staatliche Museen) were probably painted in about 1459 and depict episodes from the life of Saint Bertin, a local saint who founded a monastery in what is now St-Omer.
Recorded in the abbey church of St Bertin, St-Omer, 1695; the altarpiece remained in situ until 1783; Edmond Beaucousin collection, Paris, by 1847; bought with the Beaucousin collection, 1860.
