This panel formed the second scene after the Last Supper (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lehman Collection) in the predella of the high altarpiece of S. Croce, Florence. It is assumed that the work post-dates the artist\'s high altarpiece, now lost, for S. Maria Novella in Florence (probably 1320-4). The S. Croce altarpiece was probably paid for by the Alamanni family, whose coat of arms was originally on it. The altarpiece (see Appendix A for a reconstruction) remained complete until the late eighteenth century when an inscription beneath the central panel depicting the Virgin and Child was recorded: Ugolino de Senis me Pinxit (Ugolino of Siena painted me). Technical analysis of the surviving fragments dispersed among several collections has confirmed that the arrangement of the panels shown in an eighteenth-century drawing (Rome, Biblioteca Vaticana: Vat. Lat., 9847, f.92r) is correct.
Collection of W. Young Ottley by 1835; bought from the Fuller Russell collection, 1885.
