Christ is shown at his Crucifixion. The Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist stand on either side of his cross. The good thief is on the left and has been given an aureole; the bad thief is on the right.
NG 1138 was the predella panel of an unidentified altarpiece (presumably destroyed). Other panels from the same predella include The Resurrection (New York, Frick Collection) and The Last Supper (Edinburgh, National Gallery). Two other panels have been discussed in relation to this series: a Flagellation (Florence, ex-Berenson, now private collection) and a Capture of Christ (Arezzo, ex-Funghini collection; now lost).
The attribution to Castagno has generally been accepted with reservations, and given the scale and function of the picture as a predella panel (and the possibility that it was therefore left to an assistant to execute Castagno\'s design). NG 1138 has, however, also been attributed to Francesco Botticini, and to an unknown painter of the third quarter of the fifteenth century. The landscape has darkened and Saint John\'s head is damaged.
Said to have been in a collection in Perugia in the 1870s; bought from Charles Fairfax Murray, Florence, 1883.
