Herodotus and Plutarch both recount the story of the visit of the Athenian legislator Solon to King Croesus at Sardis. Croesus considered himself the happiest of men because of his immense wealth, and here he is shown surrounded by riches.
Although the architectural setting in NG 1132 is by Steenwyck the Younger, the figures and flowers may be by another artist. Such collaborations were common in architectural scenes of this type. Steenwyck\'s collaborator worked in the style of Jan Brueghel the Elder. The architecture is similar to that in NG 141 which is dated 1610.
