Jesus was circumcised according to Jewish tradition. Here the High Priest prepares to perform the act while Mary, Joseph (with a staff) and other figures look on. In the centre, raising his hands, is Simeon who seems to be shown at the moment when he says: \'Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation.\' New Testament (Luke 2: 21-31). The naming of Jesus, his Presentation and his Circumcision are described together in Saint Luke\'s Gospel.
NG 1128 was recorded in 1756 in the chapel of the Circumcision belonging to the Compagnia del Santissimo NOMÉ di Gesù (Company of the Holy Name of Jesus) in S. Francesco, Volterra, and is identifiable with the picture mentioned by Vasari in 1568 as having been partially repainted by Sodoma. It was probably painted when Signorelli was working in Volterra. The circular reliefs in the spandrels of the arch seem to represent a prophet and a sibyl.
A compositional study for NG 1128 and a cartoon for the head of Simeon survive on a pricked drawing in Rotterdam (Museum Boymans-van Beuningen). X-radiographs show several changes of pose centring on the Christ Child; Sodoma\'s repaint is evident in this area.
Recorded in S. Francesco, Volterra, until 1782; probably in the Lansdowne collection by 1806; collection of the Duke of Hamilton by 1854; bought, 1882.
