The townscape background is reminiscent of lakeside towns in northern Italy, but is probably not a specific view and is reused in other works by Bergognone (Tours, Musée des Beaux-Arts).
NG 1077.1 and 1077.2 were panels from an altarpiece. The date of 1501 in the inscription is acceptable though it may not be original and the second line is unclear. NG 1077 was once thought to form the central part of the altarpiece, but this is not likely.
