Saint Martin\'s cope is decorated with an Adoration of the Magi, a Virgin and Child and other saints. On his morse is Saint Martin, and on his crozier another Virgin and Child. Saint Donatian\'s morse and cross have, respectively, a Virgin and Child and a Virgin and Child and Saints. On the reverse of the panel is a damaged Christ at a window. The top of the work was originally curved.
The donor is thought to be Canon Bernardinus de Salviatis who in 1501 obtained permission to restore the altar of Saint John the Baptist in St. Donatian, Bruges. This panel is considered to be the left-hand shutter of the altarpiece. No documentation links Salviatis with the painting, but the choice of saints creates a strong association; the donor is presented by his namesake and the patron of the church also appears. No other parts of the altarpiece survive.
Apparently the wings of the altarpiece remained in situ until 1787; acquired by Thomas Barrett, 1792; bequeathed by William Benoni White, 1878.
