Lazarus (right) had lain in his tomb for four days when - at the behest of his sisters Martha and Mary Magdalene (seen between the figure of Christ and Lazarus) - Jesus (left) went to his grave and \'cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes\'. New Testament (John 11: 1-46). In the distance the Jews report the miracle to the Pharisees.
NG 1 was painted in competition with Raphael\'s Transfiguration (Rome, Vatican) for Cardinal Giulio de\' Medici in Rome in 1517-19. The painting was subsequently taken to the cardinal\'s archiepiscopal church (now the cathedral, where a fragment of the original frame remains) in Narbonne. As an ambitious depiction of divine healing and a multi-figure narrative the painting formed both an appropriate pendant to Raphael\'s picture and was appropriate in subject matter for the Medici.
Some of the main figures are based on drawings which Michelangelo (according to Vasari and Dolce) supplied for Sebastiano. Three red chalk drawings survive (Bayonne, Musée Bonnat; London, British Museum). A drawing by Sebastiano for the figure of Martha is in Frankfurt, Staedel Institute.
Orléans collection by 1723 (catalogued 1727); bought by J.J. Angerstein at the Orléans sale in London, 1798; bought, 1824.
